Summer In Alhama De Granada
We arrived in August which was more or less towards the end of
the summer season. It was a great time to arrive nonetheless.
The sun was always shining, everyone was out and about and the
weather was just right for walking (for us anyway). Everything
was brown around Alhama De Granada --- it's like the picture you
usually see of inland Andalucia --- brown scorched hills and more
brown scorched hills. We thought it was beautiful.
The summer in Alhama de Granada officially starts in June when
the temperate Spring climate comes to an end. The temperature
can go as high as 40 degrees in the day -- that we have yet to
see! (I'm writing this in the middle of the winter season and
40 degrees celsius doesn't sound too bad right now!)
Autumn In Alhama De Granada
On our first year in Alhama De Granada (recorded as the hottest
year in Spain), we didn't feel Autumn until the middle of October.
It got a little bit cooler than usual. We had quite a lot of rain
-- and there was a lot of flooding in Spain then (not in Alhama).
We also had a lot of sun and clear blue sky.
It was reasonably warm during the day but by the middle of November,
we already needed our duvets at night.
What I really liked about Autumn --as autumn is in many parts
of the world --- was the leaves changing its colors. The gorge
looked very different at this time and so did the lake.
Winter In Alhama De Granada
We didn't know what to expect of winter in Alhama De Granada.
We were looking forward to snow but not so much to the cold weather.
In December, our neighbor Carmen, kept saying it wasn't normal
winter weather --- it was just too warm. We weren't warm at all!
(As many of you know, December 2006 was apparently a warm winter
all over the world --- even the Sierra Nevada didn't have enough
snow they had to make them -- using some kind of a machine I heard).
We had one afternoon of snow just before Christmas and then a
week after that, it turned hot again! Carmen was so sure then
that winter was over and so did we.
But we were oh so wrong!
It's now the end of January and we're back to freezing temperature
again. This is supposed to last for a month and then....
It's springtime.
Spring In Alhama De Granada
Everyone I've talked to gushes about spring in Alhama de Granada.
"It's the most beautiful time of the year in the village
and the surrounding countryside," they say.
Everything will turn green from the trees to the hills. The fields
and valleys will be covered by poppy flowers, and almond trees
will start to blossom.
"Beautiful...beautiful...beautiful!"
Well, we haven't seen spring yet. So right now, we just can't
wait.
We've just had enough of winter!!
