Off my pack went. A1 & J1 who were visiting also went with
us as well (their pack status is still beyond me).
We had only been in Alhama for 2 days
and we were fresh city bumpkins who didn’t really know
what to expect.
So A2 packed some sandwiches, a bottle of water and her trusty
mosquito bite ointment. Which J2 immediately made a joke about
“We’re only going to the gorge A2, not to the
jungle.” he said
She brushed him off and took them with her anyway.
From our apartment, we walked down to Plaza constitution,
passed the ayuntamiento and followed the newly paved road
down the gorge from the side of the church.
Once there, I knew I was in for a big
adventure. From the top of that road, I could see how
deep the gorge was! I had never seen anything as deep in my
whole dog life.
I got a wee bit scared.
But the sounds of the goats in the distance were beckoning
me to continue my walk. So instead of going back home, I pulled
J2 down the gorge. He wasn’t happy about that at all.
The Bottom Of The Alhama De Granada Gorge
The
part of the gorge that we went to was dry and dusty and had
an Australian outback feel to it (I haven’t been
but I’ve heard about it in the Discovery channel). It
also reeked of goats. I loved it!
And so did J2 who commented that it smelt just like Nan &
Granddad’s farm in Somerset (now that’s one place
I would like to visit)
J1 and A2 got busy picking up mint while A1, J2 and me watched
the surroundings for any possible dangers.
As I was waiting for the girls to stuff their bags with mint,
I had a sense that something terrifying was about to happen.
That's when the girls stopped picking mint and
started moving towards the side.
I got more and more nervous by the second. With my nose alert,
my ears perked, my eyes wide open and my tail at half mast,
I obligingly followed them.
And that’s when I saw them.
Holly Molly Cats and Whiskers!!! It wasn’t one, two
or a dozen goats, but a million goats walking toward us!
“What to do!!! What to do!!! “
A million ideas from dog defense training came to mind.
Attack!!! Call for Help!!!Run!!!
But there was only one feasible solution at that time: I
found a crack between two rocks and burrowed my head in there.
And as I had craftily calculated, the goats didn’t
notice me at all!
Ha! Tricked them those stupid goats.
The other four (the less smart humans) just stood there by
the side. They said they only looked at the goats as they
drunk water from the river.
I knew better. They were scared too and I bet while I was
doing my cunning look-like-you’re-part-of-the-rock-stint,
they too were hiding for cover.
So that’s what my first Alhama De Granada Gorge walk
was like—very exciting and life changing!
